This collection comprises six poems from each of the main poets of the Romanticist movement. The poems that have been uniquely selected have been chosen to best represent the broad range of the poets’ skills in imagery and passion. Although there were other poets involved in the Romantics movement, these six chosen poets are known as “The Big Six.”

The Big Six Range Kalm 9781537268309 Books Reviews

That's what Dorothea Callum, aspiring novelist, says when she and brother Dick learn of the troubles of their old friends the Norfolk Coots. But a detective story is what the Callums end up living as they try to help mend the situation. This book probably takes place concurrently with "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea" and "Secret Water;" it's September, near the end of the summer holidays, and Dick and Dorothea have come down to Horning to stay with Mrs. Barrable again (presumably their parents are off on another archaeological jaunt). The Six of the title are the D's, doctor's son Tom Dudgeon, and the young Death and Glories, Bill, Joe, and Pete (Port and Starboard, the twin sisters of "Coot Club," have been shipped off to boarding school in Paris). The D&G's, through circumstantial evidence, are suspected of setting adrift a number of boats and of stealing and selling a quantity of naval shackles, and Constable Tedder is determined to bring them to book. In sheer self-defense the Six resolve to prove their innocence--and thanks to Dorothea's creative mind and Dick's keen powers of observation, plus a clever photographic trap, they succeed. Though the very best volumes of this series take place in the Lake Country, and there's not as much sailing or even imaginative play in this one as in most, the detections of the Six are very well done, with some of the best scenes coming as Dorothea tries to put herself into the skin of "the villain," as they call whoever seems to be setting the D&G's up for a fall. A good change of pace for this beloved series.
Moving to Horning shortly. so it was a must buy!!!
Gift for boy
Like many of Arthur Ransome's books The Big Six shows how children in the 30's and 40's were encouraged to 'do things' through reading about possibilities exemplified by others.

Whilst not quite as exciting as his other adventures about the Swallows and s (and not including any of those two sets of characters, contrary to the the title), we follow the exploits of another group of kids wrongly accused of vandalism and who, with the assistance of Dick and Dorothy solve the mystery.

Still excellent stuff and remarkable as an insight into how, for example, communications have changed over the years. A good read for children (and adults) today.
We have always read books to our kids at bedtime, and Arthur Ransome's Swallows and s books are a favorite. This one is a mystery. Boats are being cast off in the night, some shackles have been stolen, and the kids of the Coot Club are getting the blame. In a race against time, the Coots and the two D's become "Scotland Yard" to find the real culprits.
All of the Swallows and s series gets five stars. I've switched to ordering the hardback versions from the UK-- I want to keep them forever. I've read nine of the twelve to my kids, so far, and want them to last through grandchildren and beyond, some day.
One of the best in the series. Delightful believable characters you want to cheer for. Refreshing that even the grown-ups in this series, though often misguided, are usually benign. Makes you want to slip back to a simpler world where children are polite and respectful and adults are able to give them freedom that would surely get them arrested for child neglect in this more dangerous world we live in.
